Hopewell Theatre in Youngstown, Ohio, is pleased to launch New Voices, an ongoing series of staged readings of original plays. The inaugural season of New Voices will feature four events throughout 2019 and 2020. The readings will be performed by local actors with no set or blocking and minimal tech. Each play will receive one reading, free and open to the public. Playwrights will be encouraged to attend the performance (either in person or remotely) for feedback and Q&A with the audience, actors, and director.
New Voices wants scripts that are both unique and universal, scripts that are authentic, funny, disruptive, and/or poignant in unexpected ways. We are looking for a variety of voices, particularly those that have been underrepresented in American theatre. The scripts may be for full-length or short non-musical plays. They must be original to the submitter, unpublished, complete, and previously unproduced. No adaptations or works that involve third-party rights will be considered.
Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis, and simultaneous submissions are welcome. Scripts that are not immediately chosen might be considered at a later date. We will try to respond in a timely fashion.
Submit to email@example.com. Submissions must be in .doc, .pdf., or .rtf format only. Files should include a cover page with full title and author name and contact information.
Hopewell Theatre wants to provide a safe environment for all volunteers so they can enjoy their participation in our productions. In order to prevent sexual and other types of misconduct, we need to cultivate a culture where inclusion, diversity, and equity are valued and respected.
